My easy meditation tips
Starting to meditate can be daunting. The comments I hear most regularly are that people don't feel they are doing enough meditation, or don't know if they are doing it right. Even the most experienced people often put off their practice - sometimes we don't want to do what's good for us!
Here's my top tips to help you start or deepen your practice:
- There are no meditation laws.
That means no right or wrong position to be in, no right or wrong time or place to meditate, and no right or wrong techniques. The aim is for you to feel relaxed and peaceful. If you achieve this, whatever you're doing, then you're doing something right! What is 'right' for you may not be right for everyone, so never feel that you are doing it incorrectly. - Don't do it if you don't feel like it.
If you're really not in the mood, it's unlikely you will find meditating beneficial or relaxing, in fact you may feel even more frustrated than before when it isn't clicking. If you don't want to, then don't - but if you're making excuses and deep down you really do want to relax, try my next tip... - Make it easier for you.
Marching into a quiet place, shutting your eyes, and deciding to meditate - even when way out in nature - often doesn't work for many, even those with experience! You need to make sure you're ready and comfortable, and the way I begin my classes is by asking each person to close their eyes and take a big sigh, filling up your lungs and then letting out all the air in one go. Take as long as you want doing this, and take a few deep sighs if you're not feeling a shift (you can see how on my free meditation video). As you perform this with your eyes closed, you should immediately feel calmer and ready to meditate - even if you're on a busy train or bus! (I'd advise sitting down however.) - To eat or not to eat?
Teachers often recommend meditating on an empty stomach, but if you're hungry, there can be nothing more distracting than trying to ignore a rumbling stomach! I often feel more relaxed when I've just eaten lightly. Experiment and see what works for you best. - Enjoy!
Never feel guilty about anything you are, or aren't doing. If you're not meditating as often as you want to, then simply congratulate yourself on finding a technique that you want to try again, to treat yourself to some downtime when you're ready. Don't think, 'I should be doing this more often', think, 'Well done me for finding something that really helps me relax. I'll try it again when it's right for me'. If you feel you're eating or drinking something bad for you, don't punish yourself. Life is about sampling everything it has to offer, and enjoying it. My philosophy is that meditation is ultimately bringing a positive and peaceful attitude to your whole life, so everything you do is just a way of you expressing who you are at that moment, and not to be reprimanded. I still drink wine and enjoy doses of chocolate, because I believe you can bring meditation easily into your life whether you're a veggie, meat eater, peace warrior, or total grump, and that it helps you enjoy the little things like having a nice glass of wine, even more! Meditation is about bringing positivity and gratitude into your every day life, not just when you're meditating. So whatever you choose to do today, be positive and grateful, and try to see the good in all and everyone. - Be Here Now
My overall philosophy is to use meditation as a tool to love, accept and honour ourselves just as we are right now. Life is a gift with so much to offer, and my approach to meditation is to use it so we can see the beautiful little details life offers us, every single day. Happiness is not being richer, more healthy, or in love, it is this moment, right now. If you were richer, healthier, and in love,it is likely there will still be things that annoy you. However, In my classes, we will work together to see everyday as beautiful - that way, when you are richer, healthier and in love, you will already have the key to happiness and be able to enjoy it all the more!
